Hot off the press — what’s fresh at the Labs.

Firefox Mobile Concept Video

Firefox is coming to mobile. The innovation, usability, and extensibility that has propelled Firefox to 200 million users is set to do the same for Firefox in a mobile setting.

User experience is the most important aspect of having a compelling mobile product. Every bit of interaction and pixel of presentation counts when typing is laborious and screen sizes are minuscule. Many of the standard interaction models, like menus, always-present chrome, and having a cursor, don’t necessarily make sense on mobile. It’s a wickedly exciting opportunity but there are myriad challenges to getting it right.

One avenue for exploring this opportunity is through Mozilla Labs, which is about pushing the envelope towards better and brighter interaction horizons, as well as incorporating a winder community into the innovation process. This concept video explains one direction we are thinking in, and we’d love to inspire participation in thinking about other directions.

Standard Mockup/Experimental UI Disclaimer
All of the images and videos are only conceptual mockups of an experimental UI for Firefox Mobile, any particular feature may end up looking entirely different, or may not even make it into the final release.

For a full discussion of the design, and how to get involved, please head over to Aza’s post.

Interesting Layout. Dosent seem that it would work well on low resolution screens, such as my WM 6.1 HTC Apache has (240×320/320×240).

A great step forward in “open” mobile. But how will Mozilla deal with business model of “closed” deals between mobile manufacturers and the service providers?

Looking good. Good ideas. But having any functions that are based only at the bottom of the page you’re on does not seem like a good idea to me. The availability of these functions will vary based on the size of whatever page you’re at. They would be fine at the bottom of the Google home page, but, if, for some odd reason, you’d set your google search results to 100 per page (or you’re at some other very long page), all these functions will be very inconvenient and out of reach in a practical sense.

The solution that comes to mind for this problem is to have a button below where you have the Page Info button (it could be flat and wide if you’d like to keep current ratios). Click this new button and then your functions bar slides out. This would also make it convenient for when you’re performing a specific function on a part of the page. Let’s say you want to call a number or bring up a map (if we don’t have an algorithm that detects it for some reason). Merely highlight the text in question and bring out the functions bar. This would be much more convenient that highlighting a part of the text and then having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page in order to perform functions on it.

Looks great Aza, keep up the innovation. While using Safari on the iPhone is far better than any other mobile browser currently available, it does not take full advantage of the screen real estate in the manner in which your prototype for Firefox Mobile does. I think that hiding the tabs, url bar, and miscellaneous buttons is genius. I can’t wait to try it out on the iPhone.

Anyways to minimize? I know it is a mobile phone so user don’t generally have too many sites up at once, however, users also have very limited space and though the preview panel is a great idea, you might start getting frustrated when the density of websites starts getting high. Have the ability of “hand gestures” to enable more functionality. Keep the preview panel but give the user the ability to minimize.

Zoom in?

Also, eliminate the left zoom out, only have it to the right. I can already see people getting annoyed with the left zoom out when they’re just trying to hit the back button. Not everyone has that much sensitivity in their fingers.

Though I cannot afford any kind of device that could run this, so I have no experience with these things, I must say that it looks really nice and usable.

But this looks like an entirely different browser from Firefox that runs on an entirely different kind of platform … so why do you want to call it Firefox? It might turn out to be as good or better as the real Firefox on the desktop or worse than it, but it will still be a different browser with a different user interface so I would try to create an association with the real Firefox …

Just a personal opinion from a layman, of course.

What a new world, to have Firefox not only on my Mac. I really would like it on my iPhone… The Safari Mobile ist okay, but not good. Firefox is the right competitor in this race for the best mobile browser!

Interesting stuff. How will the interface handle things such as zooming to content on the page? On the iPhone, you can zoom to a block of content on the page, and then drag the page around to see other regions.

So make use of the demonstrated interface, you would have to scroll to the edge of the page, and then scroll further to ‘Zoom out’ or to perform other actions, or zoom out (presumably by double tapping as on the iPhone) then go to the edge.

Also I’m not sure of the need for allowing the user to move around and arrange ‘tabbed’ windows in Zoomed out view. Is there a way for it to keep each window neatly laid out automatically?

For a large tablet display, there may be use cases for this, but for mobile device with small screen, I’m not convinced having ‘expose-like’ functionality is as usable.

But again, interesting work and look forward to seeing new developments.
