I really like this. However, is there a way to make this transparent?? Somehow decrease the opacity like in IE7. that would be amazing. I would prefer if there was a transparent skin for the top especially…so all I see is the web page.

damn! I should patent the idea. :p lmao! How about just a hanging address bar for firefox 3?? I mean basically just let the page continue to scroll into the top. All there should be is web page. then the address bar can be called, address typed and it slowly fades away. maximum screenpage to website.

This is very nice. It seems to work well. Of course, little bugs inherent in the default theme (like its three-piece tabs where the middle parts outgrow the ends whenever the user has slightly larger than normal fonts) are still present, but this certainly solves the need for holiday themes (as the author of a Halloween theme, I get many requests for holiday themes).

If you could come up with a theme that would enlarge chrome text, it would greatly help people wiith vision problems.

I have tried this with my themes. It works with any theme that does not use an image. So, for example, although this does not work for the SphereGnome and FormalGnome themes, it works fine with the HiVisGnome themes and Scribblies Plain. Cute.

This extension is great, I set a Snowman for Christmas and Fx look fantastic, but I found small bug. Some times there are problem with Address bar and Search bar, there loose their height, but when I click on it, all is back to normal.

Cool idea, much better than themes which, yes, are too cumbersome to install just to find out it sucks.

But many of the personas render the forward/back/reload/etc buttons unreadable. Ultimately it’s a personal preference, but I wish the designers would be more careful about it.

I like the fact that the changes are applied without having to restart Firefox.

Not to be pushy, but I’d really like to see this being extended to extensions (pun?) as well. It sucks having to restart the browser everytime I install or remove an extension. And no, I’m not worried about my windows and tabs being open – I just don’t like to restart the browser just for a tiny extension to take effect.

It’s great to be able to change the background without having to make a whole new theme!
Will the official release allow users to develop their own icons too?

I find that the most interesting part of theming
is the new icons and widgets that designers create!

Thus, I have a little constructive criticism:

I felt a little bit misinformed by the description:
it says that you will be able to change “themes” =
which implied to me that they might have new icon and widget graphics.
(as do most of the best published themes)

I would like to see a distinction in definition
between a pervasive theme which changes the whole interface,
and a lightweight theme that just changes the background-image.
(a more accurate description could be a “background-changer” or “wallpaper-changer” ???)

Theme designers often put a lot of work into creating pervasive graphic themes that warp the whole browser window into a fantastic new micro-verse.

Calling a background-image swap a “theme” seems to cheapen the more pervasive themes,
and could imply to novice users that changing the background is the limit of theming.

Users will need to see more pervasive themes to be inspired to make their own:
I’m concerned that if first-time users start out using this background-changer, they will not be motivated to explore and create quality pervasive themes such as the ones available in the add-ons section.

I am searching for information on setting up my own blog. Reading others I realized that I want to write about…blah, blah, blah. Not important – but – I have a stupid PowerBook G4 that I do not understand and really hate because aliases and duplicates and all the stuff it throws in the trash and creates dozens of iTunes that are impossible to reconcile…some say it has a virus. I say that I can’t relate to men wearing black T-shirts and standing under signs that read “Genius.”

So Mac, yuck. Firefox, the very best.

If I ever meet the man who invented AdBlock I would ask him to marry me, or at least give him my first born child. Actually, my first born is named Noah, just turned 17, is one of the nicest people I have ever met, but refuses to help me with Mac. (Actually he took this computer into an Apple store. They told him it had water damage. Scary stupid Geniuses.)

I must tell the gentleman who created Adblock that he has, perhaps unintentionally, created a remarkable tool for those of us with ADD and sensory perception issues. You do so much for everyone and I really admire your dedication in a somewhat depressing world. I like coming to your site and fooling around. I am a Newbie and seriously ADD – you do not overwhelm me. Before Adblock, so many of us could not tolerate the overwhelming stimuli created by flashing lights, crawling words, bright colors – Overload! No, we are not able to watch or look at such a multitude of images. Many of us get sick and are unable to function for days. ALL stimuli has to be removed, colors, music, touch, smell, speech. To save ourselves we disassociate and if we really know what to do, we do nothing.

“Compare and Collapse” is my motto- which is why I love The Great and Powerful Adblock man.

I wonder, when you consider your projects, if you are aware of people who are left-handed, right-brained, dyslexic, and have no place to turn for help? We are the “creative” ones, and often lack the ability to use our left- to understand the “right-handed” design before us? Writing this, every time I want to erase a word(s) I have to remember to move the cursor from left to write. It is truly cerebral and confusing.

But please know that this began as a question about how to use Firefox to create a simple blog to write my days away. You may have noted that I write way too much! I feel sure that something like that exists. Also, do blogs get connected to RSSs? I know their must be a connection between reading websites – but maybe not.

I also want to know why so many apps don’t work or aren’t written for Macs – not enough co-operation – open source? Your people dislike the famous “Apple Atmosphere” that reaches deeply into your pocket and exploits you mercilessly?

If I happen to have tried an HP that has so many layers of protection it caused us both to faint – would you go with the Mac or the HP? I like PC’s, but am confused as well. But it is nothing like aliases and duplicates and files within files within files…

Which would you pick? How many of you use PCs and how many use Macs? Don’t you seriously dislike making this decision. My brothers think I am an idiot and spend my time breaking computers. My friends are too afraid to make the decision – too much responsibility. The “About” site now gives personality quizzes to help you choose the right cell phone or ring tone. Seriously. They are a goner!

If you feel like you have to blow me off – well please tell Mr. Adblock that he has saved a small nation, and thank you for being a bright and cheerful place to visit.

This is very nice extension. I discovered it by accident and I love it! Having the ability to change how Firefox looks without restarting is awesome. Will there be a way to add even more “appearances” Personas gives Firefox?

Cool. Nifty. I thought about doing something like this a couple years ago after seeing a Christmas theme that someone created, but I never got around to it. I’m glad someone else did. I really like the idea of putting different patterns and pictures behind the tool bars to make the browser shine. I also praise the program creaters for making so many different designs available to users. I just think there is one thing that persona lacks from being the perfect, must-installed Firefox add-on. To start, themes and Personas is really quite different. Themes involves changing the tool bar layout and the design of command buttons in the tool bar. Personas, however, is more like a face plate for Xbox 360. It would be really nice to combine them rather than just being able to use Personas under the default Firefox theme. Right now I use Vista Aero 2.0.0.11 as the browser theme. I really like it because it allows Internet Explore users to migrate smoothly to Firefox to enjoy the added security and convenience while at the same time maintain the high work flow that they have achieved over time. However when I tried to use Vista Aero theme and Personas at the same time, it wouldn’t work. I understand that themes are designed to change the entire browser layout and integrating Personas would be very much unnessessary. But themes such as Vista Aero has, like IE, a blank background and it would be excellent if Personas would be able to be that face plate to add some shine to it.

I havent read through all the comments above and since the forums are down for maintennance now I dont know if any users have recommended this feature before. I wanted to suggest a simple feature to personas, which is the ability to select colours only as the persona. this will add more value to the personas extension as certain users like myself would like to change the look of certain themes by changing the colour of the themes background. It would be even better if the extension also included a colour picker including the ability to punch in HEX, RGB or CMYK values. hope this is considered for future updates.

its great but once the newest update (version 1.0a6) was downloaded, I decided to go in the content tab and change my page colour.
When I checked the “allow pages to choose their own colours,instead of my selectons above” option,I found the persona skin would disappear ,as opposed to before I downlaoded the update,when my text page colour would change AND the persona stayed around,allowing me to change the whole look of my page.

January 8th when I opened my browser my background did not Load at all. January 9th, it did not load at all again. January 10th, It didn’t load again, I click on the little mask to find that it works, but that my background had been completely deleted. and now when I move the mouse over a bookmark on the browser it is NOT transparent and I’m stuck with those white lines in between everything on the bottom of the browser. I am not happy about this at all. That might explain what the hell that Update was for one of my add-ons on the 7th or 8th of January.

On the bottom of the browser I have foxclocks, The persona itself. FoxyTunes, screengrab and the Weather.com application.. and there’s a bunch of damn white lines in between and not to mention.. the background isn’t in the same position that it was before the update.

P.S make that the 11th I clicked on it to find that it works, but that my background saved had been COMPLETELY DELETED from the personas app all together. It was the 9th and 10th that my background didn’t load at all.

what happened to the Developer Kit theme? it was the only reason I used Personas.

The newest release of Personas is fantastic, I’m glad to actually see, once again, that progress is being made and this isn’t dead, it has great potential. One of the most important things that I think needs to be implemented is the ability to change a persona that you found in the directory. During the last release there were a few personas that were very good but the images weren’t big enough. Also, there are a few of the current personas that need font color changes. If the user could take the directory persona and make changes using the custom persona interface, making them better or more personalized, it would be a huge step for usability

Just updated Firefox to 3.0.6 and Personas is not able to connect with the servers. IIRC, this was the same issue with a previous Personas release and FF 3. Anyone else experiencing this? Love Personas, would like to know if this is just temporary or there’s a fix coming on the horizon. Thanks!

A proposal: Can you develop personas to dynamically change with the outside weather? e.g. if it is snowing, the picture should include snow. If it is raining, a rainy picture.. so when it stops raining the background changes… To take a step further, how about keeping a template, say a boy in a background, and then as the weather changes the boy’s clothes and outerwear also change…

This will involve getting the person’s zip code, a site which feeds back the conditions outside and changing pictures…….

I liked the ‘personas’: Themes and pretty easy to change. But more and especially liked the fact that it’s light and buoyant. The option ‘Random selection for new’ effectively demonstrates the practicality of ‘personas’ for Firefox, both of Mozilla.

I like these! The one thing I wish we could change on Firefox is the size and color of the menu commands (File, Edit, etc.) as they’re far too small for me and in some of the themes are colored the same as the background.

Not really useful with a customized firefox, for example if using a vertical tab- or toolbar. The skins ends after 1/5 of the height, which is really ugly. Same happens when using a extension which makes the statusbar bigger.

Personas are great. Loads of very cool themes. I just hate flat buttons on personal bar. They look so 1998… If you disable Personas, they return back to Vista like style thats much better to my eyes. So i’m hoping this will be fixed soon.

About three days back, I uploaded a persona onto the website using https://personas.services.mozilla.com/upload

I still have not seen my persona on the Persona homepage, and all the personas in the “Recent” section are still same old, haven’t changed since…

Could you please tell me how long it takes for Personas to be displayed online? How long does it take to screen it or whatever?

My persona’s name was “Lots of uses for paper” and was basicly a newspaper scrap kind-of theme thing. You know what I mean…

one thing though.
when it comes to the mouseover border on the icons of the browser, it’s like an old school way of highlighting it. the borders are a bit off to the whole feel of the gui. hopes that it will be fixed to the further versions of persona.

I personally think Personas is TERRIBLE. I feel like I should be browsing Geocities web-ring sites with it.

I honestly can’t believe all the positive comments. Has the internet generation truly cycled back? I remember the day when Firefox was about performance and simplicity.

More importantly, Firefox boot times were MUCH slower with Personas installed for me.
