* In Mac OS can we have an option to add to the Dock instead of the Desktop. It’s not normal or recommended on a Mac to have application shortcuts on the desktop. It’s clutter and poor organisation since the Dock works well, and people have Spotlight and QuickSilver to launch apps.

* There’s always a Prism icon in the Dock, despite a world icon on the app. I assume both are going to be a refracted favicon in the future.

* The status bar is awful looking. For Mac OS, please copy iTunes and have a slim dark grey rounded bottom statusbar with a recessed cog button, that would look excellent.

* The lozenge is visible even though it doesn’t work. This should hide/show the toolbar.

* Backspace doesn’t work!? Nor does Cmd-Left. I can’t manually move back/forward in history. For power users this is essential. We know what we’re doing and the keyboard is faster than finding a web apps particular back button on screen – if there’s any at all.

* I can’t get the URL of the page I’m on easily – say if I want to paste it in an online chat. I can’t show/hide the toolbar easily, the context menu is useless. I can’t choose to open a link externally (with Cmd-Click / Context menu). There’s no way to get back to the chosen settings for the current open webapp.

A normal browser gives me a flexible workflow even within the constraints of one domain. Prism is a good idea, but needs major polish before it can be an actual App. Forget that you’re viewing a webpage, check any other App on the Mac and look at the menus, context menus, features, the little things.

I think this is a great start on the Mac. The big thing I see is the fact that the saved sites have the world icon and not the cool Prism icon. I think that Kroc is looking for a full fledged browser and I hope Prism stays minimal as that’s what’s really necessary. Auto complete, keyboard shortcuts and all that jazz can stay in Firefox. Keep Prism simple and work on cutting the file size down.

Hmm, here is a suggestion: how about ‘packaging’ Prism as a plugin, so it can be run from any browser, not just Firefox? For example, a user can be running IE, then they have a button ‘click here to run as a desktop web app’, and when they click on it they are asked to install a plugin – just like Flash. The plugin is simply Prism. The user wouldn’t know they are really running Firefox, if this were integrated seamlessly. After installing the plugin once, other web apps could also be run in Prism with no hassles.

In this way Prism could become a cross-platform environment, just like Flash (but better in many respects, I think).

Is there a way to use https with self-signed cert ?

In my opinion, it would be usefull to have a windows version that can be used whithout needing admin rights.
This could be realy usefull for cd-rom.

Neat tool. Though i doesn’t look exactly like Firefox output (linux version), Prism is something the web-app world really needed. It renders our AJAX app without problems by now. I really anticipate the development of Prism! So long

Works for me on Windows. I’d like to have an option to make off site links open in the system default web browser.

Also, favicon support would be really useful, especially on a cluttered Windows XP start bar.

I am using it under Ubuntu 7.10 right now and it works very nicely. I don’t want to have it on the desktop, so I included it on the AWN Dock. Looks and works nicely, another step towards the online desktop. Great work!

I like this product alot, I don’t want it to behave at all like a regular web browser, at least not without having to tell it too in options.

To that end the one feature I would love to see is to have it open links in your main browser instead of in Prism’s own window. This will keepthe web app behaving more like a desktop application, which I think is the point.

I downloaded the application Prism. It ’s cool to run web applications directly from the desktop instead of clicking the web browser. As this project is still under development i would like to have some more features added.

1)I would like to have tabs in this application,because after using Firefox i am so used to tabs.

2)Also when a webapp opens in a window say i open google.com i would like to have all the web applications which i
had added to be displayed on a left pane of the window.

Add Google Gears Support, however that is done, and you’ll have a killer app!! My SMS notifications with Remember The Milk don’t work, so I have to use RTM with my Google Calendar, but I’m on the move all the time and sometimes I don’t have Wi-Fi access, so Offline access to these apps would be like GREAT!!!

I been using it with my macbook, but for some reason now I can only open one webapp at a time. Say I open RTM and try to open Gdocs, it won’t let me. It says Prism is already open and that only one instance of the application can be open at a time!! Any idea why? Or how to fix it?? Thanks!
P.S. Oh, and gosh if you keep adding all those requests, well then might as well just start a new browser to compete with Firefox. Tabs? Nav Buttons? Just use firefox then…this is supposed to be a one application per window, just like Word or Excel. You don’t see Word and Excel opened in the same window, do you huh? Do you??????????

I will second the “packaging for IE” desire expressed above. Our big dilemma is that we’re trying to develop a rich web application using SVG (among other things) and IE doesn’t support that. Some way to easily get our app up and running for an IE user would be great. Having them download, install, and re-visit using Firefox is far too onerous.

Will Java applets and the Quicktime plug-in run in Prism if they have been installed on the system? What if the user doesn’t have anything else mozilla based on their system?

To learn about adding an item to the Dock, look in the user’s Library/Preferences folder for the file “com.apple.dock.plist”

I would add the app to the Applications folder and then add it to the Dock. Make sure the name is unique from what is already in the Dock. And be sure that an app is being added because documents and folders are added a bit differently.

MacOSX has a command to manage plists: “defaults” (man defaults). “defaults write” to add or remove items to a plist and “defaults read” to read what it there.

The following command will add an app to the Dock. It is all one line but I am going to break it up:

I’m still having the same problem of not being able to open TWO webapps at the same time. I’m using a mac. When I open one and try to open a second one, I get something like “…Prism is already open, can’t open more than one Prism at a time…” or something like that. Any ideas??

I use a Mac, and I was trying out Prism, in response to Kroc’s concerns, you can add apps to the Dock by editing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist to go to the .app file created, thus adding the Prism link to the Dock.

Will there be printing functionality on the Mac version?

I have found a work-around for the bug that prevents Prism from running under Linux when there is supposedly more than one instance of Prism running. This is a false alarm and suddenly occurs for no obvious reason. Killing the process and/or restarting does not help.

The problem appears to be caused by a corrupted profile. The work-around is to start Prism from a terminal by typing:

prism -ProfileManager

Delete the current profile and then create a new one from within the profile management window. Prism will now start.

I have no idea why the profile would get corrupted in the first place. This is certainly a bug and needs to be fixed. The workaround is only a temporary solution.

You can get the same affect of this application just by dragging your bookmarks to your desktop. I gave it a try, but it’s just a superfluous program. Sorry guys, good try though. =T

I configured Prism for Google calendar and liked it so much I wanted to run Gmail in another instance. I renamed the Prism application file and double-clicked to configure it and Got the error:

“A copy of Prism is already open. Only one copy of Prism can be open at a time.”

Is there any way to run web apps at the same time? It seems that this would be key to making this a useful application.

Hi, I really like the concept of Prism.

Having played around a bit I think I have a few things that I’d like to see:

- Could you make it possible to configure the window size to automatically resize to a fixed size/aspect ratio in the initial setup screen. I am envisaging that people might want to use multiple Prism programs simultaneously (like widgets).
- I’d like to have the option to disable page scrolling
- It would be great to be able to create the option to generate customized menus (and corresponding key commands) specific to each web app

Some observations about interface:

- Gmail seems really clunky in Prism – when I’m using prism without all the usual browser interface elements I feel quite different about page layout – I expect buttons to be larger and I don’t want to scroll down the page if at all possible
- I want to use shortcut key commands in a different way
- I really expect less ‘distractions’ than are usually present in a webpage
- If I use twitter the page is far to big – I would a smaller version in a little window in the corner of my screen
- Flash apps like Flickr Organiser seem much more natural to use than most AJAX apps

Using localized version of ubuntu gutsy,
so my “Desktop” dir i s not “Desktop”.
Tried to create ta new folder called Desktop but no luck…

Prism rocks!

I use it for Google Calendar and it starts up way faster than any other calendar-system i’ve tried.

How do you use this? What does URL mean.. I thought it was like the converter for windows.

It would really be cool if you could allow prism to be docked to the system tray and hide the task bar button. Specific uses for this would be online radio stations. I want a stripped down memory efficient tool that doesn’t take up space on the task bar.

Wonderful! This is just what I was looking for. Web apps are great, but opening a browser can be too cumbersome sometimes. I love the quick access, and the fact that it’s made by Mozilla, so all those web standards are still intact! Thanks, Mozilla!

Nice programme.
Still, print support is important part of any desktop application, as well as web application.
So, this is a wish list.
