Keep track of your friends with The Coop

Just a few years ago, one of the most popular uses of the internet was to send jokes, cute pictures, and news stories to friends and family (social networks) via email. Fast forward to today, and you’ll find that not a lot has changed except the medium. Now one of the most common uses of instant messenger services and social networking sites is to send people links to jokes, cute pictures and interesting news stories.

This behavior isn’t at all surprising - it’s friends sharing experiences, the very backbone of social interactions and friendships. It’s also unsurprising that most “Web 2.0″ services have a feature that makes it easy for you to build a social network so that you can share things more easily, or subscribe to a friend’s activity as a way of keeping in touch.

What is surprising, however, is how little of this type of functionality has made it into today’s web browsers. The result is that when people think of tools for social interaction, email and instant messenger are at the top of their list, not web browsers.

Enter “The Coop”, a Mozilla Labs project to experiment with adding social tools to the web browser. We want to create a fun and easy way to share links with your friends, and to browse the set of links that friends have shared with you. We also want to make it easy to “subscribe” to a friend in order to make it easy to keep track of the pictures, movies, blog posts and status information that they might be posting on a variety of services. There’s a project page that describes The Coop in a bit more detail, and also has some mockups of how it might look (my favorite is the idea for a view that shows a stream of recently shared material.)

Myk Melez has also made an initial prototype available. (Note that you’ll have to allow add-ons to be installed from labs.mozilla.com in order to install The Coop.) This first build uses Facebook’s “Share” feature as the data transport layer for now, and allows you to share web content by dragging it onto your friend’s picture. As the project page indicates, we’re thinking of several different data transport mechanisms, as well as how we want to expose various interactions. This prototype really helps to get a feeling of what The Coop might become over time.

Those friends can share content and web pages with you (receive content from you, and send content to you). Adding a friend will mean getting access to a broad array of their published web content. Content will be pulled from that person�s Flickr photo feed, del.icio.us tag feed, MySpace status , YouTube favorites, etc. When you want to share content with that user, you simply drag it into their avatar (see mockups below). As Larry Dignan notes, The Coop could also have an impact on social networks that depend on constant user page refreshes to maintain pageview growth. It’s curious that you don’t mention Flock anywhere but in the name of the extension. I mean, you are using one of my mockups as a depiction of how you think this thing could look….!

What’s the add to me as a user to be able to have social networking within my browser? Seems like I can do everything you’re talking about now with Facebook. There is a Facebook Toolbar which brings some of that social networking functionality right into my browser. Plus why recreate a lot of the social networking wheel? Would this play nicely with the Facebook API?

[...] Michael Arrington has a post today at TechCrunch on how Mozilla is integrating social networking into Firefox and how it is bad news for Flock. Being a die hard fan of Flock, this raised some concerns for me. However, looking at the new Coop product, I think that it misses the mark for the average Flock user. The Coop creates a sidebar of your friends and shows any new content that they have posted or even pushed to you. This is perfect for people who use social networks but cannot be bothered with visiting all of their pages to check on a few friends. This keeps front and center so you are always up-to-date. Flock on the other hand offers features for what are essentially power usersw of the internet. To be honest, I never understood why they positioned themselves as a social browser as no one I know who uses it plays in social networks all that much. If it was their goal to create a social browser and they had not yet included a feature like the Coop then they have sorely missed their mark. What the have done is create a great meta tool for the internet. The killer features are the bookmark storage on del.icio.us, Flickr and Photobucket integration, and quick commands for uploading images and creating a blog post (I still cannot bring myself to use a browser based RSS reader and the Flock version pales next to Safari’s). None of these seem to be tied into the Coop and I would be curious to see how they work outside of there. All told, I don’t know that the Coop will be all that much of a threat to Flock, but a nice fork for those who really can’t get enough social networking in their lives. It will be interesting to see who the first will be to integrate Twitter in, as this seems to have a place in both. [...]

I am major fan of Firefox. Have been for some time now.

But I am among the very very many who have problems with the performance.

At least one time each day, sometimes more than that, Firefox freezes — shutting down on me.

Now, you did a great favor with the “Restore Session” feature.

But please — don’t add MORE to Firefox without fixing this performance issue.

Or, at the very least, give me a Coop-less Firefox.

Can’t wait for the beta and other releases with this feature in it come out . Mozilla again over coming Microsoft and all other browsers. The release of Firefox 3.0 is something for me to count down for.

Fire Fox crossing the Rubicon with Coop April 5th, 2007 Yesterday’s announcement is going to dramatically change the way we view,interact, and directly interface with the Internet. And not just on a literal level. If the Fire Fox browser and the past evolution of plug-ins is indicative of future development, companies like Me.dium based here in Boulder are facing a competitor with millions of embedded and highly engaged users. And to make a gross generalization, the type of people that use Fire Fox (geeks, technology forward, whatever you want to call us) are more likely to experiment and ultimately adopt wide scale usage of Coop and future social browsing plug-ins. I’m surprised no on has mentioned Friend Feed here yet. They are doing the tying together of social networks based on the people and their extension for FireFox mySocial24×7 seems to do what this project sets out to do in a similar sort of way. FriendFeed is doing the aggregation of people’s networks and the extension is displaying and giving access to the conversations.
